Export & Import Price Indices – 1st Quarter 2014

Highlights 
Export Price Index (EPI)
1. The Export Price Index (EPI) rose by 0.5% from 106.7 in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 107.3 in the first quarter of 2014. That was mainly due to increases in the prices of “Miscellaneous manufactured articles” (+4.2%), partly offset by a decrease in the prices of “Food and live animals” (-5.6%).  Main changes at lower level were: “Articles of apparel and clothing accessories” (+4.4%), “Sugar” (-9.2%) and “Fish and fish preparations” (-1.7%).
2. Compared to price levels in the corresponding quarter of 2013, the index was lower by 1.8%, explained mainly by price decreases in “Food and live animals” (-12.4%), partly offset by an increase in the prices of “Miscellaneous manufactured articles” (+4.9%).
 
Import Price Index (IPI)
3. The Import Price Index (IPI) decreased by 1.5% from 120.5 in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 118.7 in the first quarter of 2014. That was the effect of decreases in the prices of “Food and live animals” (-6.5%) and “Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials” (-1.3%), partly offset by an increase in the prices of “Manufactured goods classified chiefly materials” (+2.1%).
4. Compared to the corresponding period of 2013, the index dropped by 3.7%, mainly as a result of decreases in the prices of “Food and live animals” (-11.8%) and “Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials” (-6.2%), partly offset by an increase in the prices of “Manufactured goods classified chiefly materials” (+1.8%).
 
Terms of Trade Index
5. The terms of trade index (i.e. the ratio of Export Price Index to Import Price Index) was down by 1.8 points from 88.6 during the fourth quarter of 2013 to 90.4 in the first quarter of 2014. Compared to the corresponding period of 2013, the terms of trade rose by 1.8 points.
