Highlights
 
Third quarter 2014
 
1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 529,700 at the third quarter of 2014 compared to 527,900 at the second quarter of 2014 and 526,200 at the third quarter of 2013.
 
2.   The unemployment rate is estimated at 7.6% for the third quarter of 2014 compared to 8.0% at the third quarter 2013 and 7.8% at the second quarter 2014.
 
3.  The main characteristics of the unemployed at the third quarter of 2014 were:
 
(i)       The 43,600 unemployed comprised 18,500 males (42%) and 25,100 females (58%).
 
(ii)      20,000 or about 46% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)     More than half of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (72%) was single while among females, slightly more than half (56%) was ever married.
 
(iv)     Some 7,200 or 16% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 13,200 (30%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)      16,800 (38%) had been looking for work for one year or more.
 
(vi)     13,700 (31%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii)    5,300 or 12% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)       5,600 (13%) lived in households with no employed persons.
 
Year 2014 forecast
4.    Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 5,000 to 530,700 in 2014 from 525,700 in 2013.
 
5.    Unemployment rate is expected to decrease to 7.8% in 2014 from 8.0% in 2013.
