Labour Force, Employment and Unemployment - 2nd Quarter 2014

Highlights
 
Second quarter 2014
1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 527,900 at the second quarter of 2014 compared to 523,200 at the first quarter of 2014 and 522,000 at the second quarter of 2013.
 
2.   The unemployment rate is estimated at 7.8% for the second quarter of 2014 compared to 8.0% at both the second quarter 2013 and first quarter 2014.
 
3.  The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2014 were:
 
(i)       The 44,500 unemployed comprised 19,900 males (45%) and 24,600 females (55%).
 
(ii)      18,800 or about 42% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years. 
 
(iii)     More than half of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (69%) was single while among females, the majority (64%) was ever married.
 
(iv)    Some 8,200 or 18% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 16,200 (36%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)      9,100 (20%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi)     12,200 (27%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii)    6,600 or 15% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)       6,900 (16%) lived in households with no employed persons.
 
Year 2014 forecast
4.    Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 5,500 to 531,200 in 2014 from 525,700 in 2013.
 
5.    Unemployment rate is expected to decrease to 7.8% in 2014 from 8.0% in 2013.
