Labour Force, Employment and Unemployment (based on the results of the CMPHS) – 1st Quarter 2014

Highlights
 
First quarter 2014
 
1.  Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 523,200 at the first quarter of 2014 compared to 535,300 at the fourth quarter of 2013 and 513,900 at the first quarter of 2013.
 
2.   The unemployment rate is estimated at 8.0% for the first quarter of 2014 compared to 7.5% at the fourth quarter of 2013 and 8.6% at the first quarter of 2013.
 
3.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the first quarter of 2014 were:
 
(i)   The 45,300 unemployed comprised 19,400 males (43%) and 25,900 females (57%).
 
(ii)  18,400 or about 41% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years. 
 
(iii)  More than half (54%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (70%) was single while among females, the majority (50%) was ever married.
 
(iv) Some 7,200 or 16% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 12,400 (27%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)  10,100 (22%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi)  13,200 (29%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii)  6,600 (15%) of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)  6,700 (15%) lived in households with no employed persons.
 
Year 2014
4.      Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 5,500 to 531,200 in 2014 from 525,700 in 2013.
 
5.      Unemployment rate for the year 2014 is projected at 8.0 %, same level as in 2013.
