Population

 
1.   As at 1st July 2013, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,295,789 representing an increase of 4,333 persons and a growth rate of 0.3% over the population of 1,291,456 as at 1st July 2012.
 
2.   Islandwise, the population as at 1st July 2013 was as follows:
 
                        Island of Mauritius     1,257,121
                        Island of Rodrigues         38,379

                        Other islands                        289

 
3.   The population density of the Republic of Mauritius was around 635 persons per square kilometre as at 1st July 2013.                                                         
     
Vital Statistics
 
4.   The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2013 was 6,949, i.e., 480 live births less than that registered in the period January to June 2012.  Some 13,810 live births are expected for the year 2013.  The crude birth rate works out to 10.7 in 2013 compared to 11.2 in 2012.
5.   There were 4,562 deaths registered during the first six months of 2013, 50 more than that registered in the corresponding period in 2012. About 9,400 deaths are expected for the year 2013, resulting in a crude death rate of 7.3 compared to 7.2 in 2012.
6.   The number of infant deaths registered during the period January to June 2013 was 79 against 102 for the same period in 2012.  About 165 infant deaths are estimated for the year 2013, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 11.9, against 13.7 in 2012.
7.   The number of still births registered during the first half of 2013 was 65 compared to 74 for the same period in 2012. Around 135 still births are expected during the year 2013, resulting in a still birth rate of 9.7 compared to 9.6 in 2012.
8.    The number of marriages registered from January to June 2013 was 4,387 compared to 4,596 for the same period in 2012.  About 9,760 marriages are expected for the year 2013. The crude marriage rate works out to 15.1 against 16.1 in 2012.
