Population

 
1.         As at 1st July 2015, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,262,879 representing an increase of 1,671 persons and a growth rate of 0.1% over the population as at 1st July 2014.
 
2.         Islandwise, the population as at 1st July 2015 was as follows:
 
            Island of Mauritius     1,220,663
            Island of Rodrigues         41,942

Vital Statistics
 
3.         The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2015 was 6,736, compared to 6,955 registered during the 1st semester of 2014. Some 13,400 live births are expected for the year 2015.  The crude birth rate works out to 10.6 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2015, same as in 2014.
4.         Some 4,653 deaths were registered during the first six months of 2015. About 9,740 deaths are expected for the year 2015, resulting in a crude death rate of 7.7 per 1,000 mid-year population, same as in 2014.
5.         Infant deaths registered during the period January to June 2015 was 90 against 104 for the same period in 2014. About 170 infant deaths are estimated for the year 2015, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 12.7 per 1,000 live births, against 14.5 in 2014.
6.         The number of still births registered during the first half of 2015 was 73 compared to 85 for the same period in 2014. Around 118 still births are expected during the year 2015, resulting in a still birth rate of 8.7 per 1,000 total births, compared to 10.2 in 2014.
7.            The number of marriages registered from January to June 2015 was 4,320, compared to 4,709 for the same period in 2014. Around 9,860 marriages are expected for the year 2015. The crude marriage rate works out to 15.6 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population, against 15.8 in 2014.
