First quarter 2015
 
1.      Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 529,100 at the first quarter of 2015 compared to 538,900 at the fourth quarter of 2014 and 523,200 at the first quarter of 2014.
 
2.      The unemployment rate is estimated at 8.7% for the first quarter of 2015 compared to 7.5% at the fourth quarter of 2014 and 8.0% at the first quarter of 2014.
 
3.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the first quarter of 2015 were:
 
(i)         The 50,300 unemployed comprised 23,500 males (47%) and 26,800 females (53%).
 
(ii)        23,300 or about 46% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years. 
 
(iii)       30,900 (61%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (75%) was single while among females, half (50%) was ever married.
 
(iv)    Some 7,500 or 15% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 14,900 (30%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)        15,800 (31%) had been looking for work for one year or more.
 
(vi)       17,100 (34%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii)      5,800 (11%) of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)         7,100 (14%) lived in households with no employed persons.
 
Year 2015 forecast
4.      Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 4,000 to 534,900 in 2015 from 530,900 in 2014.
5.       Unemployment rate for the year 2015 is projected at 8.0%, higher than the rate of 7.8% for the year 2014.
