Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – Second Quarter 2015
Second quarter 2015
1.    Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 542,600 at the second quarter of 2015 compared to 527,900 at the second quarter of 2014 and 529,100 at the first quarter of 2015.
2.    The unemployment rate is estimated at 7.8% for the second quarter of 2015, same as at the second quarter of 2014 but lower than the rate of 8.7% at the first quarter of 2015.
3.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2015 were:
(i)         The 46,000 unemployed comprised 18,200 males (40%) and 27,800 females (60%).
(ii)        Around 19,700 (43%) of the unemployed were aged below 25 years. 
(iii)       Around 26,500 (58%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (77%) was single while among females, more than half (55%) was ever married.
(iv)        Some 4,900 or 11% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 15,500 (34%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
(v)        14,500 (32%) had been looking for work for a year or more.
(vi)      12,400 (27%) were looking for a first job.
(vii)      5,500 (12%) of the unemployed were heads of households.
(viii)        6,500 (14%) lived in households with no employed persons.
Year 2015 forecast
4.      Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 5,100 to 536,000 in 2015 from 530,900 in 2014.
5.      Unemployment rate for the year 2015 is projected at 8.0%, higher than the rate of 7.8% for the year 2014.
