Highlights
Third quarter 2013
 
1.      Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 562,400 at the third quarter of 2013 compared to 558,000 at the second quarter of 2013 and 549,300 at the third quarter of 2012.
 
2.      The unemployment rate is estimated at 7.8% for the third quarter of 2013 compared to 8.2% at the second quarter of 2013 and 7.9% at the third quarter of 2012.
 
3.   The main characteristics of the estimated 47,300 unemployed at the third quarter of 2013 were as follows:
 
(i)         19,700 or 42% were males and 27,600 (58%) females.
 
(ii)        Around 17,500 or about 37% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years. 
 
(iii)       About half of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (76%) was single while among females, the majority (66%) was ever married.
 
(iv)       Some 9,100 or 19% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 15,800 (33%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)        10,700 (23%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi)       13,800 (29%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii)      5,500 or 12% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)      8,500 (18%) lived in households with no employed persons.
 
Forecast, year 2013
4.   Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 12,500 to 557,300 in 2013 from 544,800 in 2012.
 
5.   Unemployment rate is expected to increase to 8.2% in 2013 from 8.1% in 2012.
