Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE)
1st Quarter 2015
Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE) consist of enterprises previously operating with an EPZ certificate as well as those manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.
1. The number of export-oriented enterprises decreased from 311 at the end of December 2014 to 304 at the end of the March 2015, following the closure of seven enterprises.
2. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2014, total employment in EOE decreased by 460 (-0.8%) from 54,877 to 54,417. Some 900 new jobs were created whilst 1,360 were lost. The job losses were due to the contraction of workforce in some enterprises (-1,158) and to the closure of 7 enterprises (-202). Employment of Mauritians went down by 532 (-1.7%) from 31,998 to 31,466 while that of foreign workers rose by 72 (+0.3%) from 22,879 to 22,951.
3. EOE exports during the quarter amounted to R 11,202 million, 7.8% lower compared to the fourth quarter of 2014 and 1.4% lower compared to the first quarter of 2014. EOE imports amounted to R 6,327 million, 13.0% lower than the fourth quarter of 2014 and 4.9% lower than the first quarter of 2014.
