Below are the highlights of the results of the “Quarterly Survey of Employment” carried out at the end of March 2014 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE). EOE consist of enterprises previously operating with an EPZ certificate as well as those manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.
2. Export Oriented Enterprises
During the 1st quarter of 2014:
(a) The number of EOE decreased from 317 to 313 due to the closure of one enterprise producing “Wearing apparel”, one producing “Flowers”, one producing “Electric and Electronic products” and one producing “Jewellery and related articles”.
(b) Total employment in EOE increased by 933 (+1.7%) from 53,678 to 54,611. Employment of Mauritians went up by 543 (+1.7%) from 32,046 to 32,589, while employment of foreign workers increased by 390 (+3.6%) from 21,632 to 22,022.
(c) 2,096 new jobs were created whilst 1,163 jobs were lost. The job losses were due to the contraction of workforce in some enterprises (-1,134) and closures of 4 enterprises (-29).
(d) EOE exports amounted to R 10,968 million, 6.6% lower compared to the previous quarter and 0.5% higher compared to the first quarter of 2013.
(e) EOE imports amounted to R 6,396 million, 16.0% lower compared to the previous quarter and 2.4% lower compared to the first quarter of 2013.
