Agricultural and Fish Production Year 2014

Highlights
1. Sugar cane
 
The production of sugar cane went up by 6.0% from 3,815,782 tonnes in 2013 to 4,044,421 tonnes in 2014.  Area harvested dropped from 53,464 hectares in 2013 to 50,687 hectares in 2014.  This resulted in an increase in the yield of sugar cane per hectare by 11.8% from 71.37 tonnes in 2013 to 79.79 in 2014. 
 
The production of sugar, consequently, went down by 1.1% from 404,713 tonnes in 2013 to 400,173 tonnes in 2014.  Compared to 10.62% in 2013, the average extraction rate was 9.91% in 2014 representing a decrease of 6.7% mainly as a result of excessive rainfall and delayed harvest. 
 
2. Tea
 
Area under tea plantation in 2014 was 672 hectares, same as in 2013. Production of green tea leaves went down by 4.7% from 7,981 tonnes in 2013 to 7,607 tonnes in 2014.  The production of manufactured tea decreased by 3.8% from 1,563 tonnes in 2013 to 1,504 tonnes in 2014.
 
 
3. Tobacco
 
There was no production of tobacco leaves in 2014 compared to only 1 tonne in 2013. 
 

4. Food crops

 
A total of 8,208 hectares under food crops was harvested in 2014, representing a rise of 0.2% over the figure of 8,189 hectares in 2013. However, the production declined by 6.6% from 118,121 tonnes to 110,366 tonnes, mainly explained by the combined effects of unfavourable climatic conditions and decreases  of 24.0 % and 32.4 % in the production of onion and pineapple respectively in 2014 compared to 2013.  The area under rice cultivation harvested increased by 35.5% from 304 hectares in 2013 to 412 hectares in 2014. The production of paddy rice went up by 83.6% from 646 tonnes to 1,186 tonnes during the same period.
           
5. Livestock
 
In 2014 beef production from live cattle was 1,956 tonnes, 0.5% higher than the production of 1,946 tonnes in 2013.  Production of beef from the slaughter of imported cattle increased by 2.1% whereas that of local beef declined by 32.2%.
 
Production of goat meat and mutton, and pork dropped by 2.2% and 9.4% respectively.
 
6. Poultry
 
The production of poultry was 47,500 tonnes in 2014 compared to 46,700 tonnes in 2013.
 
7. Fish
 
Fish production increased by 94.9% from 5,795 tonnes in 2013 to 11,297 tonnes in 2014.  Production of other catch (tuna, bank etc) rose by 144.4% while that of fresh coastal fish catch declined by 19.4%.
