Below are the highlights of the results of the “Quarterly Survey of Employment” carried out at the end of December 2013 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE). EOE consist of enterprises previously operating with an EPZ certificate as well as those manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.
2. Export Oriented Enterprises
4th Quarter 2013
2.1. During the 4th quarter of 2013:
(a) the number of EOE decreased from 319 to 317 following the closures of 2 enterprises producing wearing apparel, and wood and paper products;
(b) total employment in EOE decreased by 338 (-0.6%) from 54,016 to 53,678. Employment of Mauritians went down by 449 from 32,495 to 32,046 while employment of foreign workers increased by 111 from 21,521 to 21,632;
(c) there were 469 job creations in 44 existing enterprises and 807 job losses (of which 712 in existing enterprises and 95 due to the closure of 2 enterprises);
(d) EOE exports amounted to R 11,741 million, 2.9% lower compared to the previous quarter and 3.5% lower compared to the fourth quarter of 2012.
2.2. During the year 2013:
(a) the number of EOE went down by from 337 to 317. This is explained by the creation of 2 new enterprises and 22 closures;
(b) total employment decreased by 919 from 54,597 to 53,678 due to 3,015 job creations and 3,934 job losses;
(c) employment went up in “Jewellery and related articles” (+97) and “Food” (+86). On the other hand, employment fell by 666 in the “Wearing apparel” group.
(d) EOE exports amounted to R 46,851 million, representing an increase of 2.7% over the figure of R 45,606 million for 2012;
(e) there was an increase in exports to our main markets, namely: Italy (+R 964 million), United States of America (+R 626 million), Netherlands (+R 601 million).
