Labour force, Employment and Unemployment – Second quarter 2013

Second quarter 2013
 
1.      Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 558,000 at the second quarter of 2013 compared to 549,200 at the first quarter of 2013 and 548,300 at the second quarter of 2012.
 
2.      The unemployment rate is estimated at 8.2% for the second quarter of 2013 compared to 8.7% at the first quarter of 2013 and 8.2% at the second quarter of 2012.
 
3.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2013 were:
 
(i)   The 49,700 unemployed comprised 18,100 males (36%) and 31,600 females (64%).
 
(ii)  20,800 or about 42% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years. 
 
(iii) About half of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (72%) was single while among females, the majority (58%) was ever married.
 
(iv)    Some 8,400 or 17% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 17,600 (35%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)  12,300 (25%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi) 16,800 (34%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii) 4,700 or 9% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)  8,300 (17%) lived in households with no employed persons.
 
Year 2013
4.      Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 6,000 to 550,800 in 2013 from 544,800 in 2012.
 
5.      Unemployment rate is expected to increase to 8.3% in 2013 from 8.1% in 2012.
