Highlights
 
Fourth quarter 2014
 
1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 538,900 at the fourth quarter of 2014 compared to 529,700 at the third quarter of 2014 and 535,300 at the fourth quarter of 2013.
 
2.   The unemployment rate is estimated at 7.5% for the fourth quarter of 2014, same as at the fourth quarter 2013. The unemployment rate at the third quarter 2014 was 7.6%.
 
3.  The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2014 were:
 
(i)       The 44,000 unemployed comprised 18,800 males (43%) and 25,200 females (57%).
 
(ii)      Around 17,600 or about 40% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)     More than half of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (73%) was single while among females, slightly more than half (54%) was ever married.
 
(iv)     Some 5,400 or 12% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 16,800 (38%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)      Around 13,700 (31%) had been looking for work for one year or more.
 
(vi)     13,000 (30%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii)    4,800 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)       5,600 (13%) lived in households with no employed persons.

4.    Employment of Mauritians increased by 5,200 to 530,900 in 2014 from 525,700 in 2013.
 
5.    Unemployment rate decreased to 7.8% in 2014 from 8.0%. in 2013.
