Wage Rate Index - 3rd Quarter 2016

 Highlights

 
            The wage rate index (Base: 4th quarter 2011 = 100) increased by 1.0% or 1.4 points from 133.9 in the second quarter 2016 to 135.3 in the third quarter 2016.
2.         The wage rate index for the General Government sector which comprises Ministries, Government departments and agencies operating under them, municipalities, district councils and Rodrigues Regional Assembly decreased by 0.4% to reach 145.8 in the third quarter 2016 from 146.4 in the second quarter 2016, due to less regular allowances paid, mainly in the health sector. The General Government sector accounts for around 32% of the total weight of the wage rate index.
 
3.       Main changes registered in the sub-indices from 2nd Quarter to 3rd Quarter 2016 are:
 
Agriculture, forestry and fishing
+23.8%
Transportation and storage
  +1.9%
Water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities
  +1.7%
Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply
  +1.5%
Manufacturing
  +1.5%
Human health and social work activities
  -1.1%
Public administration and defence; compulsory social security
   -0.3%
Education
   -0.2%
 
The high increase in ‘Agriculture, forestry and fishing’ is explained by higher wages and regular allowances paid in the crop season which falls mainly in the third quarter.
