Wage Rate Index - 2nd Quarter 2016

Highlights

1. The wage rate index (Base: 4th quarter 2011 = 100) increased by 3.4% or 4.4 points from 129.4 in the first quarter 2016 to 133.8 in the second quarter 2016.
2. This increase is largely due to a rise (+6.9%) in wage rates for the General Government sector (which comprises Ministries, Government departments and agencies operating under them, municipalities, district councils and Rodrigues Regional Assembly) mainly due to salary revision. It is to be noted that although salary revision was effective as from January 2016, payments and arrears were made in April 2016. The effect of salary revision is thus reflected in the second quarter of 2016. This sector accounts for around 32% of the total weight of the wage rate index.
