Wage Rate Index - 1st Quarter 2017

 Highlights

1.   The wage rate index for the first quarter 2017 (Base: 4th quarter 2011 = 100) increased by 1.0% or 1.3 points to reach 136.8 from 135.5 in the fourth quarter 2016.

 

 
2.  The wage rate index for the General Government sector which comprises Ministries, Government departments and agencies operating under them, municipalities, district councils and Rodrigues Regional Assembly increased by 0.8% to reach 146.6 in the first quarter 2017 from 145.4 in the fourth quarter 2016. The General Government sector accounts for around 32% of the total weight of the wage rate index.
 
3.  Main changes registered in the sub-indices from 4th Quarter 2016 to 1st Quarter 2017 are:
 
Real estate activities
+3.8%
Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities
+3.6%
Professional, scientific and technical activities
+2.7%
Education
+2.1%
Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply
+1.9%
Transportation and storage
+1.9%
 
 
Agriculture, forestry and fishing
-12.3%
Human health and social work activities
-0.1%
 
 
Decrease in ‘Agriculture, forestry and fishing’ is due to intercrop season which mainly falls in the first quarter.
