January to September 2017– Highlights

 
Tourist arrivals
 
1.    The number of tourist arrivals for the first nine months of 2017 increased by 6.1% to reach 934,679.

 

2.    The performance of our main markets, which accounted for 72% of total tourist arrivals for the first nine months of 2017, is given in the table below:

3.  Among the emerging markets, India and Russian Federation posted increases of 5.2% and 23.1% respectively whereas People’s Rep. of China witnessed a decrease of 3.8%.
 
4.  Based on recent data on tourist arrivals and information gathered from stakeholders, the forecast of 1,360,000 tourist arrivals for the year 2017 is maintained.  This results in an increase of 6.6% over the figure of 1,275,227 in 2016. 

 

5.  The forecasted number of tourists for the year 2018 is 1,425,000.

 
Tourism earnings
 
6.  The Bank of Mauritius is maintaining the forecast of tourism earnings at Rs 58.8 billion for the year 2017.   This figure represents an increase of 5.2% over the Rs 55.9 billion for 2016. 
 

7.   For the year 2018, tourism earnings are forecasted at Rs 61.6 billion.
