International Travel and Tourism - 1st Quarter 2019

 

January to March 2019 – Highlights

 

 
Tourist arrivals
 
1.     The number of tourist arrivals for the first Quarter of 2019 decreased by 1.2% to attain 352,305 compared to 356,415 for the first Quarter of 2018.
 
2.     Tourist arrivals by air decreased by 4.5% from 344,231 in the first quarter of 2018 to 328,764 in the first Quarter of 2019 while those arriving by sea increased by 93.2% from 12,184 to 23,541.
 
3.    The performance of our main markets, which accounted for 68% of total tourist arrivals for the first Quarter of 2019, is given in the table below:

4.         Among the main markets, France and Germany recorded growths of 3.4% and 7.0% respectively.  However, India, Reunion Island and People’s Republic of China witnessed decreases of 5.6%, 11.2% and 31.3% respectively.
 
5.         Based on recent data on tourist arrivals and information gathered from stakeholders, the forecast of tourist arrivals for 2019 is revised downwards from 1,450,000 to 1,435,000, representing an increase of 2.5% over the figure of 1,399,408 in 2018.
 
 
 
Tourism earnings
 
6.       The Bank of Mauritius has revised the forecast of tourism earnings for the year 2019 downwards from Rs 67.5 billion to Rs 66.0 billion, representing an increase of 3.1% compared to Rs 64.0 billion recorded in 2018.
