Vehicles registered
 
1.            At end of December 2017, some 531,797 vehicles were registered at the National Transport Authority compared to 507,676 at the end of December 2016, i.e. an increase of 24,121 or 4.8%.
 
2.            Some 29,386 vehicles joined the fleet, whilst 5,265 were put out of circulation during the year.
 
3.            The fleet consisted mostly of cars, double cab pickup and dual-purpose vehicles (272,213 or 51%) and motorized two-wheelers (205,493 or 39%). The remaining 10% comprised vans, lorries, trucks, buses and other vehicles.
 
Road traffic accidents
 
4.            The number of road traffic accidents increased by 1.2% from 29,277 in 2016 to 29,627 in 2017.  Among these accidents, 152 were fatal (caused death) against 132 in the preceding year, up by 15.2%.
 
5.            Accident rate, (number of accidents per 100,000 mid-year population) is estimated at 2,425, higher than the 2016 figure of 2,397. The number of accident per 1,000 mid-year registered vehicles works out to 57 against 59 in 2016.
 
6.            The total number of vehicles (motor and non-motorised) involved in road accidents in 2017 was 58,295, that is, 799 or 1.4% higher than the 2016 figure of 57,496.
 
7.            The number of casualties (fatalities and persons injured as a result of road accidents) increased by 8.7% from 3,862 in 2016 to 4,199 in 2017. Among the casualties, around 40.2% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 24.0% passengers, 16.3% pedestrians 15.3% drivers, and 4.2% pedal cyclists.
 
8.            In 2017, the number of casualties was 4,199 (+8.7%) against the figure of 3,862 in 2016. Among the casualties, 157 (+9%) were fatal compared to 144 in 2016.
