Road Transport and Road Traffic Accident Statistics (Island of Mauritius) - Jan-Jun 2016

January - June 2016 – Highlights
 
Vehicles registered
 
1.       At end of June 2016, some 496,755 vehicles were registered at the National Transport Authority compared to 486,144 at the end of December 2015, i.e. an increase of 10,611 or 2.2%.
 
2.       Between January and June 2016, some 13,198 vehicles joined the fleet while 2,587 were put out of circulation.
 
3.       The fleet consisted largely of cars, double cap pickup and dual-purpose vehicles (247,575 or 50%) and motorized two-wheelers (196,631 or 39%). The remaining 11% comprised vans, lorries, trucks, buses and other vehicles.
 
Road traffic accidents
 
4.       During January to June 2016, the number of road accidents increased by 6.0% to 14,452 compared to 13,635 recorded during the corresponding period of 2015. Among these accidents, 68 were fatal (caused death) against 66 registered during the corresponding period of 2015.
 
5.       The total number of vehicles (motor and non-motorised) involved in road accidents during the period January to June 2016 was 28,294, that is, 1,623 or 6.1%  higher than the figure of 26,671 recorded during the same period of 2015.
 
6.       During the same period, the number of casualties increased by 2.1% to 1,911 compared to 1,871 recorded in the corresponding period of 2015. Among the casualties, around 40% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 24% passengers, 16% pedestrians, 16% drivers and 4% pedal cyclists.
 
7.       During the first semester of 2016, some 72 persons died as a result of road accidents against 68 during the corresponding period of 2015, showing an increase of 5.9%.
