January - June 2017 – Highlights
 
Vehicles registered
 
1.            At end of June 2017, some 519,265 vehicles were registered at the National Transport Authority compared to 507,676 at the end of December 2016, i.e. an increase of 11,589 or 2.3%.
 
2.            Between January and June 2017, some 14,230 vehicles joined the fleet while 2,641 were put out of circulation.
 
3.            The fleet consisted largely of cars, double cap pickup and dual-purpose vehicles (263,145 or 51%) and motorized two-wheelers (202,606 or 39%). The remaining 10% comprised vans, lorries, trucks, buses and other vehicles.
 
Road traffic accidents
 
4.            During January to June 2017, the number of road accidents increased by 4.0% to 15,037 compared to 14,452 recorded during the corresponding period of 2016. Among these accidents, 69 were fatal (caused death) against 68 registered during the corresponding period of 2016.
 
5.            The total number of vehicles (motor and non-motorised) involved in road accidents during the period January to June 2017 was 28,973, that is, 667 or 2.4%  higher than the figure of 28,306 recorded during the same period of 2016.
 
6.            During the same period, the number of casualties increased by 4.1% to 2,004 compared to 1,925 recorded in the corresponding period of 2016. Among the casualties, around 40% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 24% passengers, 17% pedestrians, 15% drivers and 4% pedal cyclists.
 
7.            During the first semester of 2017, some 73 persons died as a result of road accidents against 72 during the corresponding period of 2016, showing an increase of 1.4%.
