Vehicles registered
 
1.            At end of December 2018, some 556,001 vehicles were registered at the National Transport Authority, compared to 531,797 at the end of December 2017, i.e. an increase of 24,204 or 4.6%.
 
2.            Some 29,682 vehicles joined the fleet, whilst 5,478 were put out of circulation during the year.
 
3.            The fleet consisted mostly of cars, double cab pickup and dual-purpose vehicles (289,676 or 52%) and motorized two-wheelers (211,125 or 38%). The remaining 10% comprised vans, lorries, trucks, buses and other vehicles.
 
Road traffic accidents
 
4.            The number of road traffic accidents decreased by 1.9% from 29,627 in 2017 to 29,075 in 2018.  Among these accidents, 132 were fatal (caused death) against 152 in the preceding year, down by 13.2%.
 
5.            Accident rate, (number of accidents per 100,000 mid-year population) is estimated at 2,379, lower than the 2017 figure of 2,425. The number of accident per 1,000 mid-year registered vehicles works out to 54 against 57 in 2017.
 
6.            The total number of vehicles (motor and non-motorised) involved in road accidents in 2018 was 57,104, that is, 1,260 or 2.2% lower than the 2017 figure of 58,364.
 
7.            The number of casualties (fatalities and persons injured as a result of road accidents) decreased by 11.7% from 4,209 in 2017 to 3,718 in 2018. Among the casualties, around 39.3% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 25.9% passengers, 15.5% drivers, 15.3% pedestrians and 4.0% pedal cyclists.
 
8.            In 2018, the number of casualties was 3,718 (-11.7%) against the figure of 4,209 in 2017. Among the casualties, 143 (-8.9%) were fatal compared to 157 in 2017.
