Year 2015 – Highlights

 

Vehicles registered
 
1.            At end of December 2015, some 486,144 vehicles were registered at the National Transport Authority compared to 465,052 at the end of December 2014, i.e. an increase of 21,092 or 4.5%.
 
2.            Some 26,013 vehicles joined the fleet whilst 4,921 were put out of circulation during the year.
 
3.            The fleet consisted mostly of cars, double cab pickup and dual-purpose vehicles (240,289 or 49%) and motorized two-wheelers (193,688 or 40%). The remaining 11% comprised vans, lorries, trucks, buses and other vehicles.
 
Road traffic accidents
 
4.            The number of road traffic accidents increased by 7.9% from 26,400 in 2014 to 28,476 in 2015.  Among these accidents, 127 were fatal (caused death) against 125 in the preceding year, up by 1.6%.
 
5.            The total number of vehicles (motor and non-motorised) involved in road accidents in 2015 was 55,827, that is, 4,431 or 8.6% higher than the 2014 figure of 51,396.
 
6.            The number of casualties (fatalities and persons injured as a result of road accidents) increased by 6.0% from 3,592 in 2014 to 3,809 in 2015. Among the casualties, around 40% were riders of auto/motor cycles, 25% passengers, 16% pedestrians, 15% drivers and 4% pedal cyclists.
 
7.            During the year 2015, some 139 persons died as a result of road accidents against 137 in 2014, showing an increase of 1.5%.
