Population

 
1.       As at 1st July 2017, the population of the Republic of Mauritius stood at 1,264,887, with a growth rate of 0.1% over the population as at 1st July 2016.
 
2.       Islandwise, the population as at 1st July 2017 was as follows:
 
          Island of Mauritius           1,221,975
          Island of Rodrigues               42,638
           Agalega and St Brandon                  274 

        

     
Vital Statistics
 
3.       The number of live births registered during the first semester of 2017 was 6,810, compared to 6,858 during the 1st semester of 2016. Some 13,100 live births are expected for the year 2017. The crude birth rate works out to 10.4 per 1,000 mid-year population in 2017, same as in 2016.
4.       Some 4,818 deaths were registered during the first six months of 2017. About 10,030 deaths are expected for the year 2017, resulting in a crude death rate of 7.9 per 1,000 mid-year population, compared to 8.1 in 2016.
5.       The number of infant deaths registered during the period January to June 2017 was 80 against 96 for the same period in 2016. About 150 infant deaths are estimated for the year 2017, resulting in an infant mortality rate of 11.5 per 1,000 live births, against 11.8 in 2016.
6.       The number of still births registered during the first half of 2017 was 67 compared to 71 for the same period in 2016. Around 120 still births are expected during the year 2017, resulting in a still birth rate of 9.1 per 1,000 total births, compared to 9.6 in 2016.
7.       The number of marriages registered from January to June 2017 was 4,497, compared to 4,695 for the same period in 2016. Around 9,860 marriages are expected for the year 2017. The crude marriage rate works out to 15.6 persons married per 1,000 mid-year population, against 15.9 in 2016.
