Producer Price Index - Agriculture

1. Monthly index
 
Overall index
 
The Producer Price Index–Agriculture, which was 91.1 in September 2017, went up by 15.7% to reach 105.4 in December 2017. This rise was due to increases of 3.5%, 5.2% and 6.3% in October, November and December respectively.
                              
 
Sugar cane
 
The index for “Sugar cane” for the period July to December 2017 was 75.8 based on the provisional price of sugar for the 2017 crop. This represents a decrease of 23.0% over the 2016 crop.  It is assumed that the same price prevails during the whole of the crop year. 
 
Other crop products
 
-          In October 2017, the index for “Other crop products” increased by 14.3% mainly due to increases in the prices of fresh vegetables (+18.2%) and fruits and nuts (+15.9%).
-          In November 2017, the index went up by 13.1% mainly due to increases in the prices of fresh vegetables (+3.8%), and fruits and nuts (+47.3%).
-          In December 2017, the index rose by 16.6% mainly due to increases in the prices of fresh vegetables (+3.3%) and fruits and nuts (+43.3%),
 
Animals and animal products
 
-          In October 2017, the index for “Animals and animal products” went down by 0.2% due to a decrease in the prices of eggs (-1.5%), partly offset by higher prices of goat (+2.0%) and cattle (+1.0%).
-          In November 2017, the index went up by 2.6% due to increases in the prices of pigs (+15.4%), poultry (+3.0%) and eggs (+1.9%).
-          In December 2017, the index increased by 2.1% due to increases in the prices of pigs (+13.3%), poultry (+1.7%) and eggs (+3.6%).
 
2. Quarterly index
 
During the fourth quarter of 2017, PPI-A increased by 4.3% compared to the previous quarter. This was due to higher prices of fruits and nuts (+77.3%), partly offset by lower prices of fresh vegetables (-4.3%).
 
Compared to the fourth quarter of 2016, the index increased by 1.1%.
 
3. Yearly index
 
In 2017, producer prices of agricultural products were on average 4.9% higher compared to 2016.
