Producer Price Index - Agriculture - 2nd Quarter 2017

1. Monthly index
 
Overall index
 
The Producer Price Index–Agriculture, which was 104.7 in March 2017, went up by 9.3% to reach 114.4 in June 2017. The rise was due to increases of 0.9%, 7.3% and 1.0% in April, May and June respectively.
                              
 
Sugar cane
 
The index for “Sugar cane” for the period July 2016 to June 2017 was 98.4 based on the final price of sugar for the 2016 crop. This represents an increase of 18.3% over the 2015 crop.  It is assumed that the same price prevails during the whole of the crop year. 
 
Other crop products
  
-        In April 2017, the index for “Other crop products” went up by 1.5% mainly due to the combined effects of an increase in the prices fruits and nuts (+10.4%) and a decrease in the prices of fresh vegetables (-1.1%).
-        In May 2017, the index went up by 21.4% mainly due to increases in the prices of fresh vegetables (+31.1%) and fruits and nuts (+8.5%).
-        In June 2017, the index increased by 2.6% mainly due to an increase in the prices of fruits and nuts (+39.7%), partly offset by a decrease in the prices of fresh vegetables  (-2.7%).

 

 
Animals and animal products

  

-         In April 2017, the index for “Animals and animal products” increased by 2.0% mainly due to increases in the prices of eggs (+5.8%), poultry (+0.8%) and pigs (+18.3%).
-         In May 2017, the index up by 1.9% due to an increase in the prices of eggs (+11.6%).
-         In June 2017, the index increased by 0.2% due to an increase in the prices of eggs (+1.0%).

 

 
2. Quarterly index
 
During the second quarter of 2017, PPI-A increased by 9.5% compared to the previous quarter. This was mainly due to higher prices of fresh vegetables (+41.6%) and fruits and nuts (+25.6%).
 
Compared to the second quarter of 2016, the index increased by 17.6%.
 
3. Yearly index
 
In 2016, producer prices of agricultural products were on average 4.5% higher compared to 2015.
