First quarter 2013
 
1.      Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 549,200 at the first quarter of 2013 compared to 556,100 at the fourth quarter of 2012 and 535,500 at the first quarter of 2012.
 
2.      The unemployment rate is estimated at 8.7% for the first quarter of 2013 compared to 7.8% at the fourth quarter of 2012 and 8.0% at the first quarter of 2012.
 
3.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the first quarter of 2013 were:
 
(i)         The 52,500 unemployed comprised 22,100 males (42%) and 30,400 females (58%).
 
(ii)        19,300 or about 37% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years. 
 
(iii)       About half of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (71%) was single while among females, the majority (67%) was ever married.
 
(iv)    Some 9,900 or 19% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 17,000 (32%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)        11,200 (21%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi)       16,700 (32%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii)      8,200 or 16% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)         6,600 (13%) lived in households with no employed persons.

4.      Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 6,500 to 551,300 in 2013 from 544,800 in 2012.
 
5.      Unemployment rate is expected to increase to 8.3% in 2013 from 8.1% in 2012.
