Highlights
 
Fourth quarter 2016
 
1.      Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 546,600 at the fourth quarter of 2016 compared to 545,600 at the fourth quarter of 2015 and 536,300 at the third quarter of 2016.
 
2.      The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2016 is estimated at 6.6%, lower than the rates of 7.9% at fourth quarter 2015 and 7.6% at the third quarter 2016.
 
3.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2016 were:
 
(i)         The 38,900 unemployed comprised 13,200 males (34%) and 25,700 females (66%).
 
(ii)        18,300 or about 47% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)       Around 21,800 (56%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (80%) was single compared to 44% among the females.
 
(iv)    Some 3,800 or 10% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 11,100 (29%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)        6,200 (16%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi)      10,900 (28%) were looking for a job for the first time.
 
(vii)      3,800 or 10% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)     5,400 or 14% lived in household with no employed persons.
 
 
Year 2016            
4.      Employment of Mauritians increased by 300 to 538,600 in 2016 from 538,300 in 2015.
 
5.      Unemployment rate decreased to 7.3%, in 2016 from 7.9% in 2015.
