Labour Force, Employment and Unemployment - 4th Quarter 2015



Fourth quarter 2015
1.  Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 545,600 at the fourth quarter of 2015 compared to 536,500 at the third quarter of 2015 and 538,900 at the fourth quarter of 2014.
2.  The unemployment rate is estimated at 7.9% for the fourth quarter of 2015, higher than the rates of 7.4% at the third quarter 2015 and 7.5% at the fourth quarter 2014.
3.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2015 were:
(i)The 46,600 unemployed comprised 19,700 males (42%) and 26,900 females (58%).
(ii)22,100 or about 47% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
(iii)Around 28,300 (61%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (77%) was single compared to 49% among the females.
(iv)Some 6,000 or 13% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 13,000 (28%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
(v)9,600 (21%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
(vi)14,600 (31%) were looking for a first job.
(vii)5,200 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
          (viii)4,900 (11%) lived in households with no employed persons.

4.  Employment of Mauritians increased by 7,400 to 538,300 in 2015 from 530,900 in 2014.


5.  Unemployment rate increased slightly to 7.9% in 2015 from 7.8% in 2014.
