Highlights
 
Second quarter 2016
 
1.      Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 537,000 at the second quarter of 2016 compared to 542,600 at the second quarter of 2015 and 528,200 at the first quarter of 2016.
 
2.  The unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2016 is estimated at 7.4%, lower than the rates of 7.8% at the second quarter 2015 and 7.6% at the first quarter 2016.
 
3.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2016 were:
 
(i)         The 43,100 unemployed comprised 18,400 males (43%) and 24,700 females (57%).
 
(ii)        19,300 or about 45% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)       Around 25,200 (58%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (80%) was single compared to 43% among the females.
 
(iv)    Some 5,000 or 12% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 14,600 (34%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)        10,300 (24%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi)      12,100 (28%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii)      5,200 or 12% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
 
Forecast Year 2016           
4.  Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 4,100 to 542,400 in 2016 from 538,300 in 2015.
 
5.  Unemployment rate for the year 2016 is projected at 7.5%, lower than the rate of 7.9% for the year 2015.
