First quarter 2016
 
1.      Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 528,200 at the first quarter of 2016 compared to 529,100 at the first quarter of 2015 and 545,600 at the fourth quarter of 2015.
 
2.      The number of unemployed persons stood at 43,500 at the first quarter 2016 compared to 50,300 at the first quarter of 2015 and 46,600 at the fourth quarter of 2015.
 
3.      The unemployment rate for the first quarter of 2016 is estimated at 7.6%, lower than the rates of 8.7% at the first quarter 2015 and 7.9% at the fourth quarter 2015.
 
4.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the first quarter of 2016 were:
 
(i)         The 43,500 unemployed comprised 17,200 males (40%) and 26,300 females (60%).
 
(ii)        18,700 or about 43% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)       Around 24,100 (55%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (79%) was single compared to 40% among the females.
 
(iv)    Some 4,300 or 10% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 16,200 (37%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)        7,700 (18%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi)      13,600 (31%) were looking for a first job.
 
(vii)      4,700 or 11% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)         5,200 (12%) lived in households with no employed persons.
 
Forecast Year 2016           
5.      Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 2,200 to 540,500 in 2016 from 538,300 in 2015.
 
6.      Unemployment rate for the year 2016 is projected at 7.7%, lower than the rate of 7.9% for the year 2015.
