Highlights
 
First quarter 2017

  

1.      Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 536,100 at the first quarter of 2017 compared to 528,200 at the first quarter of 2016 and 546,600 at the fourth quarter of 2016.
 
2.      The unemployment rate for the first quarter of 2017 is estimated at 7.6%, same rate as the first quarter 2016 but higher than the rate of 6.6% at the fourth quarter 2016.
 
3.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the first quarter of 2017 were:
 
(i)         The 44,300 unemployed comprised 17,700 males (40%) and 26,600 females (60%).
 
(ii)        22,200 or about 50% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)       Around 26,000 (59%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (76%) was single compared to 47% among the females.
 
(iv)    Some 3,600 or 8% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 15,600 (35%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)        10,200 (23%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi)      15,100 (34%) were looking for a job for the first time.
 
(vii)      4,300 or 10% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)     5,100 or 12% lived in household with no employed persons.
 
 
Forecast Year 2017           
4.      Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 1,400 from 538,600 in 2016 to 540,000 in 2017.
 
5.      Unemployment rate for the year 2017 is projected at 7.3%, same rate as in 2016.
