Labour Force Employment and Unemployment (Based on CMPHS) - 4th Quarter 2017

 Highlights

 

Fourth quarter 2017
 
1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 548,000 at the fourth quarter of 2017 compared to 546,600 at the fourth quarter of 2016 and 542,400 at the third quarter of 2017.
 
2.   The unemployment rate for the fourth quarter of 2017 is estimated at 6.7%, higher than the rate of 6.6% at the fourth quarter 2016 and lower than the rate of 7.0% at the third quarter of 2017.
 
3.  The main characteristics of the unemployed at the fourth quarter of 2017 were:
 
(i)       The 39,600 unemployed comprised 16,300 males (41%) and 23,300 females (59%).
 
(ii)      16,700 or about 42% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)     Around 25,200 (64%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (84%) was single compared to 49% among the females.
 
(iv)     Some 3,700 or 9% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 12,900 (33%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)      32,900 (83%) had been looking for work up to one year.
 
(vi)     14,100 (36%) were looking for a job for the first time.
 
(vii)    2,400 or 6% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)    4,500 or 11% lived in households with no employed persons.

4.    The employment level of Mauritians increased by 6,500 from 538,600 in 2016 to 545,100 in 2017.
 
5.     Unemployment rate for year 2017 stood at 7.1% compared to 7.3% for 2016.
