Labour Force, Employment and Unemployment (based on CMPHS) - 3rd Quarter 2017

 Highlights

 

 Third quarter 2017

1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 542,400 at the third quarter of 2017 compared to 536,300 at the third quarter of 2016 and 549,400 at the second quarter of 2017.
 
2.   The unemployment rate for the third quarter of 2017 is estimated at 7.0%, lower than the rates of 7.6% at the third quarter 2016 and 7.2% at the second quarter of 2017.
 
3.  The main characteristics of the unemployed at the third quarter of 2017 were:
 
(i)       The 40,600 unemployed comprised 16,400 males (40%) and 24,200 females (60%).
 
(ii)      19,500 or about 48% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)     Around 24,400 (60%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (79%) was single compared to 48% among the females.
 
(iv)    Some 3,600 or 9% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 12,900 (32%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)      35,200 (87%) had been looking for work up to one year.
 
(vi)      12,900 (32%) were looking for a job for the first time.
 
(vii)    3,800 or 9% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)    5,500 or 14% lived in households with no employed persons.
 
 Forecast Year 2017           
4.    Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 5,300 from 538,600 in 2016 to 543,900 in 2017.
 
5.     The unemployment rate for the year 2017 is revised downwards to 7.1% from 7.2% forecasted in June 2017. The rate for the year 2016 was 7.3%.
