Labour Force, Employment and Unemployment (Based on the results of CMPHS) - 2nd Quarter 2017

Highlights
 
 
1.   Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 549,400 at the second quarter of 2017 compared to 537,000 at the second quarter of 2016 and 536,100 at the first quarter of 2017.
 
2.   The unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2017 is estimated at 7.2%, lower than the rate of 7.4% at the second quarter 2016 and 7.6% at the first quarter of 2017.
 
3.  The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2017 were:
 
(i)       The 42,600 unemployed comprised 19,000 males (45%) and 23,600 females (55%).
 
(ii)      18,600 or about 44% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.
 
(iii)     Around 26,200 (62%) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (79%) was single compared to 47% among the females.
 
(iv)    Some 4,100 or 10% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 15,400 (36%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.
 
(v)      15,100 (36%) had been looking for work for more than one year.
 
(vi)      13,300 (31%) were looking for a job for the first time.
 
(vii)    4,200 or 10% of the unemployed were heads of households.
 
(viii)    7,800 or 18% lived in household with no employed persons.
 
 
Forecast Year 2017           
4.    Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 8,400 from 538,600 in 2016 to 547,000 in 2017.
 
5.     The unemployment rate for the year 2017 is revised downwards to 7.2% from 7.3% forecasted in March 2017. The rate for the year 2016 was 7.3%.
