International Travel and Tourism - 1st Quarter 2017

January to March 2017– Highlights
 
Tourist arrivals
 
1.  The number of tourist arrivals for the first Quarter of 2017 increased by 3.6% to reach 339,682.
 
2.  The performance of our main markets, which accounted for 70% of total tourist arrivals for the first Quarter of 2017, is given in the table below:

3.  Among the emerging markets, People’s Rep. of China and Russian Federation posted increases of 0.3% and 25.1% respectively whereas India witnessed a decrease of 1.3%.
 
4.  Based on recent data on tourist arrivals and information gathered from stakeholders, the forecast of tourist arrivals for the year 2017 is revised upwards from 1,340,000 to 1,350,000.  This results in an increase of 5.9% over the figure of 1,275,227 in 2016. 
 
 
Tourism earnings
 
5.   The Bank of Mauritius is maintaining the forecast of tourism earnings at Rs 58 billion for year 2017.   This figure represents an increase of 3.8% over the Rs 55.9 billion for 2016.
