Below are the highlights of the results of the “Quarterly Survey of Employment” carried out at the end of September 2013 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE). EOE consist of enterprises previously operating with an EPZ certificate as well as those manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.
2. Export Oriented Enterprises
From the 2nd quarter 2013 to the 3rd quarter of 2013:
(a) The number of EOE decreased from 324 to 319 due to the closure of 5 enterprises, of which 2 were producing “Wearing apparel”.
(b) Total employment in EOE decreased by 152 (-0.3%) from 54,168 to 54,016. Employment of Mauritians went down by 906 (-2.7%) from 33,401 to 32,495, while employment of foreign workers increased by 754 (+3.6%) from 20,767 to 21,521.
(c) There were 916 job creations due to the expansion of workforce in some enterprises. Job losses totalled 1,068, of which 1,028 were due to the contraction of workforce in some enterprises and 40 through the closures of 5 enterprises.
(d) EOE exports amounted to R 12,093 million, 0.1% lower compared to the previous quarter and 5.6% higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012.
(e) EOE imports amounted to R 7,632 million, 1.5% higher compared to the previous quarter and 23.0% higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012.
