Highlights
1. Introduction
Below are the highlights of the results of the “Quarterly Survey of Employment” carried out at the end of June 2013 among Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE). EOE consist of enterprises previously operating with an EPZ certificate as well as those manufacturing goods for exports and holding a registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment.
2. Export Oriented Enterprises
From the 1st quarter 2013 to the 2nd quarter of 2013:
(a) The number of EOE decreased from 329 to 322 due to the closure of 7 enterprises, of which 4 were producing “Wearing apparel”.
(b) Total employment in EOE decreased by 518 (-1.0%) from 54,650 to 54,132. Employment of Mauritians went down by 623 from 33,994 to 33,371, while employment of foreign workers increased by 105 from 20,656 to 20,761.
(c) There were 681 job creations in existing enterprises mainly producing “Textile yarn and fabrics” and “Food”; and 1,199 job losses, 785 of which were due to the contraction of workforce in some enterprises and 414 through the closure of 7 enterprises.
(d) EOE exports amounted to R 12,103 million, 10.9% higher compared to the previous quarter and 4.2% higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012.
(e) EOE imports amounted to R 7,518 million, 14.7% higher compared to the previous quarter and 13.3% higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012.
