Agricultural and Fish Production - Year 2016

 Highlights

 

1. Sugar cane
 
The production of sugar cane went down by 5.3% from 4,009,232 tonnes in 2015 to 3,798,448 tonnes in 2016.  This is mostly explained by a decrease of 4.1% in the yield of sugar cane from 76.53 tonnes per hectare in 2015 to 73.79 in 2016.  The area harvested decreased from 52,387 hectares in 2015 to 51,477 hectares in 2016.    
 
The production of sugar went up by 5.5% from 366,070 tonnes in 2015 to 386,277 tonnes in 2016.  Compared to 9.14% in 2015, the average extraction rate was 10.18% in 2016 representing an increase of 11.4% mainly due to favourable climatic conditions.
 
2. Tea
 
Area under tea plantation increased by 8.4% from 574 hectares in 2015 to 622 hectares in 2016.  Production of green tea leaves went up by 8.5% from 6,732 tonnes in 2015 to 7,301 tonnes in 2016.  The production of manufactured tea increased by 4.5% from 1,295 tonnes in 2015 to 1,353 tonnes in 2016.
 
 
3. Food Crops 
 
A total of 7,858 hectares under food crops was harvested in 2016, representing a decrease of 2.7% over the figure of 8,077 hectares in 2015. The production increased by 4.7% from 102,663 tonnes to 107,457 tonnes due to favourable climatic conditions.  The area under rice cultivation harvested decreased by 52.6% from 340 hectares in 2015 to 161 hectares in 2016. The production of paddy rice went down by 46.4% from 657 tonnes to 352 tonnes during the same period.
           
5. Livestock
 
In 2016 beef production from live cattle was 1,956 tonnes, 2.8% lower than the production of 2,013 tonnes in 2015.  Production of beef from the slaughter of imported cattle decreased by 1.3% and that of local beef went down by 36.5%.
 
Production of goat meat and mutton was 42 tonnes in 2016 same as in 2015, while that of pork rose by 12.9%.
 
6. Poultry
 
The production of poultry was 45,800 tonnes in 2016 compared to 46,400 tonnes in 2015.
 
7. Fish
 
Fish production increased by 20.2% from 12,650 tonnes in 2015 to 15,195 tonnes in 2016.  Production of other catch (tuna, bank etc) rose by 20.7% and that of fresh coastal fish catch increased by 16.1%.
