Agricultural and Fish Production Year 2015

 

Highlights

1. Sugar cane

  

The production of sugar cane went down by 0.9% from 4,044,422 tonnes in 2014 to 4,009,232 tonnes in 2015.  This is mostly explained by a decrease of 4.1% in the yield of sugar cane from 79.78 tonnes per hectare in 2014 to 76.53 in 2015.  The area harvested increased from 50,694 hectares in 2014 to 52,387 hectares in 2015.    
 
The production of sugar, consequently, went down by 8.5% from 400,173 tonnes in 2014 to 366,070 tonnes in 2015.  Compared to 9.91% in 2014, the average extraction rate was 9.14% in 2015 representing a decrease of 7.8% mainly as a result of excessive rainfall and delayed harvest. 
 
2. Tea
 
Area under tea plantation decreased by 14.6% from 672 hectares in 2014 to 574 hectares in 2015.  Production of green tea leaves went down by 11.5% from 7,607 tonnes in 2014 to 6,732 tonnes in 2015.  The production of manufactured tea decreased by 13.9% from 1,504 tonnes in 2014 to 1,295 tonnes in 2015.
 
 
3. Tobacco
 
There was no production of tobacco leaves in 2015. 
 
 
4. Food Crops
 
A total of 8,137 hectares under food crops was harvested in 2015, representing a decrease of 3.8% over the figure of 8,459 hectares in 2014. The production declined by 11.8% from 113,957 tonnes to 100,528 tonnes, mainly explained by the combined effects of unfavourable climatic conditions and decreases  of 24.3 % and 22.7 % in the production of potato and tomato respectively in 2015 compared to 2014.  The area under rice cultivation harvested decreased by 17.5% from 412 hectares in 2014 to 340 hectares in 2015. The production of paddy rice went down by 44.6% from 1,186 tonnes to 657 tonnes during the same period.
           
5. Livestock
 
In 2015 beef production from live cattle was 2,013 tonnes, 2.9% higher than the production of 1,956 tonnes in 2014.  Production of beef from the slaughter of imported cattle increased by 1.5% and that of local beef went up by 45.9%.
 
Production of goat meat and mutton decreased by 6.7% to reach 42 tonnes in 2015, while that of pork rose by 0.5%.
 
6. Poultry
 
The production of poultry was 46,400 tonnes in 2015 compared to 47,500 tonnes in 2014.
 
7. Fish
  
Fish production increased by 2.2% from 12,376 tonnes in 2014 to 12,650 tonnes in 2015.  Production of other catch (tuna, bank etc) rose by 1.1% and that of fresh coastal fish catch increased by 10.6%.
