Agricultural and Fish Production - Year 2017

 

Highlights

1. Sugar cane
 
The production of sugar cane went down by 2.2% from 3,798,448 tonnes in 2016 to 3,713,331 tonnes in 2017.  The average yield has increased by 0.7% from 73.79 tonnes per hectare in 2016 to 74.31 in 2017. The area harvested decreased from 51,476 hectares in 2016 to 49,973 hectares in 2017.    
 
The production of sugar went down by 8.0% from 386,277 tonnes in 2016 to 355,213 tonnes in 2017. Compared to 10.18% in 2016, the average extraction rate was 9.57% in 2017 representing a decrease of 6.0% mainly due to unfavourable climatic conditions.
 
2. Tea
 
Area under tea plantation was 622 hectares in 2017 same as in 2016.  Production of green tea leaves went up by 0.1% from 7,301 tonnes in 2016 to 7,309 tonnes in 2017.  The production of manufactured tea increased by 1.9% from 1,353 tonnes in 2016 to 1,379 tonnes in 2017.
 
 
 

3. Food crops

 
A total of 7,780 hectares under food crops was harvested in 2017, representing an increase of 0.2% over the figure of 7,766 hectares in 2016. The production increased by 0.3% from 106,271 tonnes to 106,621 tonnes in 2017. The area under rice cultivation harvested decreased by 65.2% from 161 hectares in 2016 to 56 hectares in 2017. The production of paddy rice went down by 54.5% from 352 tonnes to 160 tonnes during the same period.
         
5. Livestock
 
In 2017, beef production from live cattle was 2,078 tonnes, 6.2% higher than the production of 1,956 tonnes in 2016.  Production of beef from the slaughter of imported cattle increased by 4.7% and that of local beef went up by 59.3%.
 
Production of goat meat and mutton went up by 33.3% from 42 tonnes in 2016 to 56 tonnes in 2017.  The production of pork decreased by 4.1%.
 
6. Poultry
 
The production of poultry was 47,500 tonnes in 2017 compared to 45,800 tonnes in 2016.
 
7. Fish
 
Fish production increased by 36.1% from 16,698 tonnes in 2016 to 22,732 tonnes in 2017.  Production of other catch (tuna, bank etc) rose by 40.8% and that of fresh coastal fish catch decreased by 2.6%.
