3rd Quarter 2010

Highlights

1. Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 542,200 at the third quarter of 2010 compared to 541,900 at the second quarter of 2010 and 527,300 at the third quarter of 2009.

2. The unemployment rate for the third quarter of 2010 is estimated at 7.6%, same level as at second quarter of 2010. It stood at 7.4% at the third quarter of 2009.

3. The main characteristics of the unemployed at the third quarter of 2010 were:

(i) There were 44,400 unemployed comprising 16,200 males (36%) and 28,200 females (64%).

(ii) 18,000 or about 41% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.

(iii) Slightly more than half (22,300) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (80%) was single while among females, the majority (67%) was ever married.

(iv) Some 6,700 or 15% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 20,000 (45%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.

(v) 9,800 (22%) had been looking for work for more than one year.

(vi) 14,400 (32%) were looking for a first job.

(vii) 3,400 or 8% of the unemployed were heads of households.

(viii) 4,900 (11%) lived in households with no employed persons.

4. Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 11,700 from 524,800 in 2009 to 536,500 in 2010.

5. Unemployment rate is expected to increase from 7.3% in 2009 to 7.5% in 2010.
