2nd Quarter 2010

Highlights

1. Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 541,900 at the second quarter of 2010 compared to 524,400 at the first quarter of 2010 and 517,700 at the second quarter of 2009.

2. The unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2010 is estimated at 7.6% compared to 8.4% at the first quarter of 2010 and 8.3% at the second quarter of 2009.

3. The main characteristics of the unemployed at the second quarter of 2010 were:

(i) There were 44,800 unemployed comprising 18,100 males (40%) and 26,700 females (60%).

(ii) 19,800 or about 44% of the unemployed were aged below 25 years.

(iii) Slightly more than half (23,700) of the unemployed were single. Among males, the majority (81%) was single while among females, the majority (66%) was ever married.

(iv) Some 8,200 or 18% had not reached the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) level or equivalent and a further 20,000 (45%) did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent.

(v) 10,600 (24%) had been looking for work for more than one year.

(vi) 15,500 (35%) were looking for a first job.

(vii) 3,600 or 8% of the unemployed were heads of households.

(viii) 5,300 (12%) lived in households with no employed persons.

4. Employment of Mauritians is expected to increase by 6,300 from 524,800 in 2009 to 531,100 in 2010.

5. Unemployment rate is expected to increase from 7.3% in 2009 to 7.5% in 2010.
