Survey of Employment and Earnings in Large Establishments, March 2011 (preliminary results)

Highlights

Change in employment from March 2010 to March 2011


1. Employment in large establishments increased by 863 from 301,729 (192,094 males and 109,635 females) to 302,592 (190,574 males and 112,018 females).

2. Main changes in employment were registered in the following industry groups:

Wholesale & retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles,
personal and household goods +893
Construction +875
Hotels and restaurants +769
Real estate, renting and business activities +732

Manufacturing -2,397
Agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing -675

3. Employment in the General Government Sector decreased by 444 from 73,947 (49,219 males and 24,728 females) to 73,503 (48,022 males and 25,481 females). Male employment decreased by 1,197 while female employment increased by 753.

4. Employment in large Export Oriented Enterprises (EOE) decreased by 2,008 from 56,624 (23,588 males and 33,036 females) to 54,616 (22,316 males and 32,300 females).

5. The number of foreign workers increased by 1,175 from 21,161 (12,514 males and 8,647 females) to 22,336 (12,784 males and 9,552 females).

6. Overall average monthly earnings in large establishments increased by 9.9% from Rs 18,247 to Rs 20,050. A general upward trend was observed in all industry groups with highest increases in ‘Construction’ (13.6%), ‘Transport, storage and communication’ (13.3%), ‘Real estate, renting and business activities’ (12.7%) and ‘Public administration and defence; compulsory social security’ (11.1%).

7. Average monthly earnings in the large EOE went up by 10.6% from Rs 9,297 to Rs 10,286.
